| RFID: Experience becomes reality... |
| |
Geodis has successfully finalised the set up of a "logistics loop" management system using RFID technology.
Watch in live our operations at Tarbes (in French): inventory management of Alstom's spare parts used in the manufacture of technical cabinets for French high-speed trains. |
| RFID : What's it all about? |
| |
| Closed-loop RFID |
| This cycle involves one customer (at one or more sites) and its suppliers. Post-production, the customer returns empty containers bearing reusable tags to a Geodis sorting and distribution centre which returns them to the suppliers. |
| |
The suppliers re-fill the containers and reset the tags. The newly-filled containers are then consolidated by Geodis and sent back to the customer to complete the cycle.
This type of RFID circuit is already a reality: the necessary operating solutions have been developed and services of increasing reliability are set to be rolled out over the next few years. |
| |
| Open-loop RFID |
The tag is affixed to the container (box, parcel, etc.) or directly to the product. It ensures that the product can be traced from start to finish (end customer) but is not reintroduced into the logistics loop.
This type of application is more a prospect of what is to come. |
| Before it can be widely rolled-out, an international standard must be drawn up, involving more reliable and commonplace reading tools as well as cost-effective tags. |
